Celebrating our Volunteers

Sport BC Awards

Sport BC's Presidents’ Awards are presented annually to volunteers from Sport BC member organizations who represent the spirit of volunteerism, and whose dedication, energy, and commitment contribute to development of their sport or organization. This year’s recipient, chosen by Tennis BC, was Doug Rawson. Doug has worked very hard promoting tennis, not only at his home tennis club of Salmon Arm Tennis Club, but in the whole North Okanagan Region over the past 10 plus years. He has been instrumental in the grassroots development of tennis within the area through the delivery of Tennis BC's Schools' Program, which brings tennis to hundreds of students and teachers. He often volunteers his time coaching; his junior lessons at the Salmon Arm Tennis Club have resulted in the highest number of junior memberships to date. Many parents of these juniors have also joined the club. In the North Okanagan, Doug has also been the main force in organizing adult teams to play in the Miele Team Championships. Over the past ten years, new public courts have had to be built to satisfy the demand of new tennis players created through Doug's continually full community classes. Thank you Doug!

The finalists for the other awards were as follows:

Junior Male Athlete of the Year – Filip Peliwo
Senior Male Athlete of the Year – Vasek Pospisil
Senior Female Athlete of the Year – Rebecca Marino

Davis Cup

It can be said, an exciting time was had by all at the BNP Paribas 2012 Davis Cup Tie held February 10-12 at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre!

A word of THANKS to our amazing group of Tennis BC volunteers - you helped to make this event the success that is was thanks to your generosity of time, boundless energy and contagious tennis enthusiasm - we couldn't have done it without you!

Stanley Park Open

Our Canadian players have moved on to new events,  and here in BC we look forward to more exciting tennis, including the Senior Men's & Women's Western Canadian Indoor National Championships in April  (hosted at RCC, RTC, T&C & SNSC),

The 81st Stanley Park Open in July at the famous Vancouver Park location, and The $200,000 Odlum Brown Vancouver Open in August at the breathtaking views of Hollyburn Country Club.

No matter the level of event, whether it’s a Professional Event, a Provincial Championship, a Club Tournament, or a Rookie Tour, tennis organizers rely on a fabulous group of volunteers.   These dedicated tennis enthusiasts give back to the sport that they love, stay in touch with fellow competitors, guide new players, and present the “Face of Tennis” to the general public.

Our Stanley Park Volunteers are a special breed too – this year, the Big Game Hunting theme brought out more humour and energy than ever, and this spirit of volunteerism was celebrated with a fall party at the Edge Cafe.   Great food, great camaraderie, and a team pumpkin carving contest renewed the team spirit that is so evident in British Columbia.
