Atlanta Open Wheelchair Championships May 12, 2008 by Tennis Canada Vancouver’s Yuka Chokyu recorded a pair of excellent results at the Atlanta Open Wheelchair Championships that took place last week in Georgia. She was one of four Canadian athletes participating in the event. In the women’s open doubles division, Chokyu teamed up with Japan’s Chiyoko Ohmae to reach the championship round. As the No. 2 seeds, Chokyu and Ohmae had to battle from behind in their semifinal match against Karin Korb (United States) and Katharina Kruger (Germany) but were able to escape with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory to set up a clash against the top-seeded American tandem of Beth Arnoult and Kaitlyn Verfuerth. The match was close from start to finish, with the Americans ultimately pulling off a 7-6(4), 7-5 triumph to capture the trophy. Chokyu also had a great run in singles, advancing to the semifinals as the No. 4 seed. Following a first round bye, she defeated American Emmy Kaiser 7-6, 6-2 to reach the semis for the third straight tournament and fourth time this season. She eventually fell to 6-3, 7-6(5) to Verfuerth, who went on to win the event. Meanwhile, a trio of other Canadians were showcasing their talents at the tournament. In the men’s open main singles division, Montreal’s Yann Mathieu drew a tough first round opponent in Lahcen Majdi (France), the No. 4 seed, and fell 6-4, 6-1 while top seed Joel Dembe (Lynden, Ontario) suffered a 6-2, 7-5 quarter-final defeat at the hands of American John Becker in the men’s open second draw. Finally, Hamilton, Ontario native Adrian Dieleman dropped a first round contest in the quad open division to American Rafael Zamarripa.
