Tennis BC would like to congratulate Port Moody’s Sasha Vagramov for winning her Junior ITF title at the Monterrey San Agustin ITF Junior Cup last week! Not only did Sasha not drop a set en route to the title, but because the rest of the team had to catch a flight back to Canada for the U16 National Championships, the team had to leave in the middle of the match – leaving Sasha alone to grind out the win! After coming out on top, Sasha herself had to rush to the airport to make the flight, and she did!
Throughout the two weeks in Mexico, BC juniors were very successful. During week one, Sasha also reached the Singles Semifinals and won the Girls Doubles ITF G4 title with fellow Canadian Layne Sleeth. Sophia Ho made it through a tough three rounds of qualifying to earn herself a spot in the main draw and win her first round, while Jessie Gong reached the Round of 16 in Singles. On the boys side during week one, Luka Vukovic reached the Singles Semifinal and Jerry Huang reached the Quarterfinals. In doubles, the BC boys duo reached the Round of 16.
During week two play at the Deportivo San Agustin in Mexico, Sasha claimed the Girls Singles title, while Sophia Ho battled past three rounds of qualifying once again to reach the Quarterfinals where she faced Vagramov. On the bottom half of the draw, Gong fell in two close sets to a wild card from Mexico. In the Boys Singles draw, Vukovic reached the Quarterfinals of singles, while 10th seeded Huang reached the Round of 16. In doubles action, Vagramov teamed up with Canada’s Raphaelle Lacasse to reach the Quarterfinals where they fell to the first seeds, while third seeded Gong played with Rut Galindo of Guatemala. In Boys Doubles, the BC boys played with partners from Mexico. Vukovic would fall in the second round to Huang, while second seeded Huang reached Boys Doubles Final.
After these great two weeks in Mexico, many of our BC players reached career high junior rankings (U18 ITF rankings as of 22/08/16):
Sasha Vagramov – #425 (career high)
Jessie Gong – #622
Sophia Ho – #904 (career high)
Jerry Huang – #431 (career high)
Luka Vukovic – #469 (career high)
